This measure would declare the month of June 2026 as Congenital Cytomegalovirus Awareness Month. Digest Key Fiscal Committee: NO Bill Text WHEREAS, Congenital cytomegalovirus (cCMV) is a common virus that infects people of all ages and is the most common infectious cause of birth defects in the United States, affecting approximately 1 in 200 infants; and WHEREAS, Approximately 1 in 5 children born with cCMV will experience permanent health problems, including hearing loss, vision impairment, developmental and motor delays, and other serious medical conditions; and WHEREAS, cCMV is a leading nongenetic cause of childhood hearing loss; and WHEREAS, Despite its prevalence and potential severity, awareness of cCMV among pregnant individuals and the general public remains low; and WHEREAS, Increased public awareness and education about cCMV, including preventative hygiene practices during pregnancy, have the potential to reduce transmission and improve maternal and child health outcomes; and WHEREAS, Early detection and timely intervention can significantly improve outcomes for infants born with cCMV; and WHEREAS, Families affected by cCMV often face complex medical, emotional, and caregiving challenges and benefit from increased awareness, support, and access to resources; and WHEREAS, Advocacy organizations, including the National CMV Foundation, along with dedicated California-based advocates and community leaders, are working to increase awareness, support affected families, and advance research efforts related to cCMV; and WHEREAS, The State of California recognizes the importance of collaborative efforts among health care providers, advocacy organizations, and community leaders to improve awareness, prevention, and outcomes related to cCMV; now, therefore, be it Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate thereof concurring, That the Legislature recognizes the month of June 2026 as Congenital Cytomegalovirus Awareness Month in the State of California; and be it further Resolved, That the Legislature honors the ongoing efforts of national and California-based organizations, advocates, and families working to raise awareness of cCMV and support those impacted by this condition; and be it further Resolved, That all Californians are encouraged to become informed about cCMV, including methods of prevention, transmission risks, and the importance of early detection; and be it further Resolved, That health care providers, public health agencies, and community organizations are encouraged to promote education and awareness of cCMV to improve maternal and child health outcomes across California; and be it further Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies of this resolution to appropriate state and local health agencies, interested organizations, and the author for appropriate distribution.
