  89R8483 JBD-D     By: Dorazio H.B. No. 2501       A BILL TO BE ENTITLED   AN ACT   relating to the authority of a political subdivision to use public   money to provide legal services in a removal proceeding for an   individual unlawfully present in the United States.          BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:          SECTION 1.  Chapter 140, Local Government Code, is amended   by adding Section 140.014 to read as follows:           Sec.   140.014.     PROHIBITION ON USE OF PUBLIC MONEY TO PROVIDE   CERTAIN LEGAL SERVICES FOR UNLAWFULLY PRESENT INDIVIDUALS. Unless   required by the United States Constitution, a political subdivision   may not:                 (1)     use public money to provide legal services in a   removal proceeding for an individual who is unlawfully present in   the United States according to the terms of the federal Immigration   and Nationality Act (8 U.S.C. Section 1101 et seq.); or                 (2)     provide public money to a person to be used to   directly or indirectly provide legal services in a removal   proceeding for an individual described by Subdivision (1).          SECTION 2.  This Act takes effect September 1, 2025.
